Iron & rust stain removal from concrete

Iron staining is the one concrete problem where pressure washing genuinely doesn't help. Those orange-brown marks aren't dirt sitting on the slab — they're iron oxide that has soaked into the concrete's pores and reacted with the cement. You can blast at 4000 PSI all day and barely lighten them. What shifts iron is the right acid, correctly applied.

Work out where the iron is coming from

This matters, because if you treat the stain without fixing the source you'll be doing it again next summer.

The sprinkler case is by far the most common, and the giveaway is the shape: irrigation throws water in arcs, so the staining follows the same arcs.

What doesn't work

  • Pressure alone. The stain is in the concrete. Reaching it with water force means eroding the surface.
  • Chlorine bleach. Excellent on mould and algae, useless on iron. It can also react with iron and darken the mark.
  • General-purpose degreasers. Wrong chemistry entirely — they target oils, not metal oxides.
  • Vinegar. Too weak at 4–5% acetic acid for anything but the freshest surface mark.
  • Hydrochloric acid. Sold cheaply as brick cleaner and frequently recommended online. It will lighten rust, but it aggressively etches concrete, leaves the surface rough and chalky, and can turn white efflorescence yellow. It's the most common way people permanently damage a driveway trying to fix a stain.

What does work: oxalic acid

Oxalic acid is the standard treatment for iron on concrete. It binds to iron and pulls it into solution so it can be rinsed away, and it's markedly gentler on the concrete surface than hydrochloric. It's sold as a rust remover, as a timber deck brightener, and in powder form as wood bleach — all the same active ingredient.

For heavier, built-up rust, phosphoric acid is stronger. It also etches concrete more readily, so dilute conservatively and always test first.

Step by step

  1. Fix the source first. Move the object, adjust the sprinkler, treat the rusting bracket. Otherwise you're cleaning on a schedule forever.
  2. Sweep and pre-wet the slab. Damp concrete absorbs less acid into the pores, which keeps the product working on the stain rather than soaking away.
  3. Protect everything around it. Pre-wet garden beds and lawn, and keep acid off metal, painted surfaces and anything aluminium. Wear eye protection and chemical-resistant gloves — oxalic acid is toxic and irritating.
  4. Test in a hidden corner. Non-negotiable on coloured, stencilled or sealed concrete, which can lighten dramatically.
  5. Apply and let it dwell. Ten to fifteen minutes, kept wet. Watch it — you'll usually see the orange fade as it works.
  6. Agitate with a stiff nylon brush. Never a wire brush; it leaves steel fragments behind that rust and start a new stain.
  7. Rinse thoroughly, and neutralise. Flush with plenty of water. A dilute bicarb solution neutralises residual acid so it stops working on the concrete.
  8. Repeat rather than escalate. Two or three gentle applications beat one aggressive one. Strength is what damages concrete; patience is what removes stains.

Where the pressure washer does help

After the chemistry. A low-pressure rinse flushes dissolved iron out of the surface pores far more effectively than a hose, and it lifts the general grime and mould that's usually sitting over the stain and disguising your progress. Runoff: don't put acid down the stormwater drain

Acidic runoff carrying dissolved iron shouldn't go into stormwater, which in most areas discharges straight to a creek or lake untreated. Neutralise with bicarb, dilute heavily, and direct the runoff onto lawn or garden rather than the drain. Block or bag the drain if it's close to the work.

Stopping it coming back

  • Redirect the sprinklers so bore water isn't hitting concrete. This solves the majority of cases outright.
  • Fit an iron filter to the irrigation line if redirecting isn't practical.
  • Sweep fertiliser off concrete immediately — don't hose it, that drives it in.
  • Don't leave metal on the slab. Steel furniture feet, tools, pot stands and jerry cans all leave a mark within a wet week.
  • Seal the concrete once it's clean and fully dry. A penetrating sealer dramatically slows iron uptake and makes future treatment far easier.

A Canberra note

Bore and tank water are common enough around the ACT and the surrounding NSW districts that sprinkler rust is a regular call-out, particularly on larger blocks in Hall, Murrumbateman, Sutton and out towards Bungendore. It tends to show up worst in late summer after a full irrigation season. What removes iron stains from concrete?

An acid that chelates iron — oxalic acid or a dedicated oxalic-based rust remover for most stains, or phosphoric acid for heavier deposits. Household cleaners, chlorine bleach and pressure alone will not touch iron staining, because the discolouration is a chemical compound sitting in the concrete pores rather than dirt on the surface.

Will a pressure washer remove rust stains from concrete?

No, not on its own. Pressure removes what sits on top of concrete; iron staining has penetrated into it. Blasting hard enough to reach the stained layer means eroding the concrete surface itself. The correct sequence is chemical treatment first, then a low-pressure rinse to flush the dissolved iron away.

Does vinegar remove rust from concrete?

Only on the lightest, freshest surface marks. Vinegar is acetic acid at around 4–5% and is far too weak for established iron staining. It is often worth a try on a fresh sprinkler mark, but for anything set in you need oxalic or phosphoric acid.

What causes orange stains on a concrete driveway?

Most often bore or tank water with a high iron content, sprayed repeatedly across the slab by irrigation. Other common sources are iron-rich fertiliser being wetted on the concrete, rusting metal left sitting on the surface, corroding reinforcement or tie wire near the surface, and iron pyrite particles within the aggregate itself.

Can rust stains be permanently removed from concrete?

Usually most of it, sometimes all of it. Surface staining from bore water or a rusting object generally comes out well. Staining fed by corroding reinforcement inside the slab will keep returning until the underlying corrosion is dealt with, and pyrite particles in the aggregate can leave a permanent freckle where the particle sits.

Is oxalic or phosphoric acid better for rust on concrete?

Oxalic acid is the usual first choice — it is effective on iron, widely sold as a rust remover, and gentler on the concrete surface. Phosphoric acid is stronger and suits heavy, built-up rust, but it etches concrete more readily, so it needs careful dilution and a test patch.
